Pre-Pill Considerations
Being well-informed is key to making a decision that’s right for you. Before choosing the abortion pill, it’s crucial to undergo an ultrasound to determine the gestational age and location of the pregnancy. This information will help ensure the method’s effectiveness and your safety.

The best thing you can do for your health is to get answers to the following important questions:

Pregnancy Confirmation Info
My Pregnancy Test Came Back Positive. Now What?
When you first find out you are pregnant, it can be overwhelming to know what the next steps are. When you take a pregnancy test at Care Net Milwaukee, we ensure you get directed to the next best step, which is an ultrasound. Ultrasounds are so important, and they can tell you so much about your pregnancy. To best care for you and your pregnancy, an ultrasound is necessary.
Why are Ultrasounds Necessary?
Care Net Pregnancy Center of Milwaukee, or any clinic, will want to conduct an ultrasound early on in your pregnancy in order to:
- Confirm your pregnancy
- Estimate gestational age
- Rule out ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage
A pregnancy test alone does not determine whether a pregnancy is viable. A urine test will detect the presence of the hormone HCG which is present during a pregnancy. This hormone can be present up to 5 weeks following a miscarriage. Up to 20% of pregnancies can end in miscarriage.
The age of the baby and the viability of the pregnancy are both crucial factors for you to know when deciding how to approach an unplanned pregnancy. In fact, if you’re considering abortion, the law in Wisconsin requires that you have an ultrasound before the abortion.
How Much Does an Ultrasound Cost?
Our ultrasounds are completely free. We know that discovering you are pregnant can be overwhelming, and we don’t want to put added stress on your shoulders. We don’t charge for any of our services, including ultrasounds. We also do not require insurance.

What are the Signs of a Miscarriage?
If you are having a miscarriage, the symptoms are similar to those of period symptoms. You may experience bleeding, cramping, dizziness, and pain. During a miscarriage, your body is trying to get rid of the fetal tissue to prevent infection and get healthy again, so you may see parts of fetal tissue being passed.
What is not normal during a miscarriage is a fever, chills, and foul-smelling discharge. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek out medical help immediately. These could be signs of a sepsis miscarriage and there could be an infection going on.
Difference Between Abortion and Miscarriage
An abortion and a miscarriage are not the same thing. A miscarriage is the abrupt and unplanned end to a pregnancy. An abortion is the intentional ending of a pregnancy through outside intervention. There is some confusion as to whether or not miscarriage care is the same as abortion care, and this is not the case. When a woman miscarries and goes to the doctor to receive care to help rid her body of the remaining fetal tissue (this process is called a D&C) she is not undergoing an abortion, as the fetus has already died and pregnancy has already ended. For it to be considered an abortion, the fetus would have to be alive when this procedure is conducted.
This is an important distinction, as Wisconsin’s abortion laws only allow abortion up to 20 weeks of pregnancy. If you have undergone a miscarriage or have experienced an incomplete abortion and you are past the 20-week gestational age, you can still go to the hospital and receive help, as it is not illegal to receive a D&C for miscarriage or post-abortive care.

What are strategies for avoiding morning sickness?
Morning sickness can sometimes be triggered by both the feeling of an empty or full stomach. To avoid this, a lot of women eat small portions of food throughout the day and snack constantly. Keeping a snack in your purse or nightstand is a good idea. Additionally, eating immediately after waking up (even before you leave your bed) can fill your stomach slightly before you even get the chance to feel nauseous. Smells can often be a trigger as well, so keeping something that you can sniff to counteract whatever smell is making you nauseous can be beneficial. Some women find that smelling lemons or other citrus helps to decrease nausea.
Natural Family Planning: A Natural Birth Control Method
There are many contraception options or “family planning” methods that couples use. The most common birth control methods that we hear about are birth control pills, condoms, and IUDs, however, there is another lesser-known method that is completely natural and has similar efficacy rates as other methods. This method is called natural family planning (or NFP).
Natural family planning, which is sometimes also referred to as “fertility awareness”, is a way that a woman can monitor various fertility signals to determine the times of the month when she is most (or least) likely to become pregnant. NFP can be used to both prevent and achieve pregnancy. This method is one of the safest ways to do so and is also a great method for those who have religious or other concerns with the use of contraceptives.
*Although natural family planning is natural and safe, its effectiveness depends on how consistently the method is followed. NFP does not protect against STIs.
Safe Haven Laws
Finding yourself unexpectedly pregnant or having a baby that was not planned can be incredibly scary. “Safe Haven Laws” have been implemented in some states to allow an anonymous option for a mother to give up an infant in a way that is both safe for the child and without criminal repercussions for the mother. If you would like to talk with someone confidentially about the Safe Haven option in Wisconsin you can text or call Care Net Milwaukee to learn more.
