At Care Net Milwaukee, we understand that facing an unplanned pregnancy can be overwhelming, and exploring all your options is important. If you’re considering abortion, you likely have many questions and concerns. We’re here to provide you with factual information about the potential risks and side effects associated with abortion procedures, so you can make an informed decision that’s right for you.
It’s important to remember that every woman’s body is unique, and experiences can vary. The type of abortion procedure also influences the potential risks. While some women experience minimal side effects, others may face more significant complications. We encourage you to discuss your specific situation and concerns with a qualified healthcare professional.
Heavy Bleeding and Hemorrhaging
Bleeding after an abortion is common, but excessive bleeding or hemorrhaging is a serious risk. Hemorrhaging can occur during or after the procedure and may require a blood transfusion or further medical intervention. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) acknowledges hemorrhage as a potential complication of abortion.1 The risk of hemorrhage tends to be higher with later-term abortions.
Infection
Infection can develop after an abortion if bacteria enter the uterus. Symptoms of infection can include fever, chills, pelvic pain, and foul-smelling discharge. Untreated infections can lead to serious complications, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) which can affect future fertility.2
Incomplete Abortion
In some cases, the abortion procedure may not completely remove all pregnancy tissue from the uterus. This is known as an incomplete abortion. It can lead to continued bleeding, cramping, and infection. If an incomplete abortion occurs, a follow-up procedure may be necessary to remove the remaining tissue. This can be a physically and emotionally challenging experience.1
Uterine Perforation
Uterine perforation is a rare but serious complication where a surgical instrument punctures the uterus during the abortion procedure. This can cause damage to surrounding organs and may require surgical repair. The risk of perforation is slightly higher with later-term abortions and in women who have had previous uterine surgery.1
Cervical Injury
The cervix can be injured during an abortion procedure, particularly during dilation. This can lead to bleeding, pain, and potential future complications with pregnancy, such as premature delivery.1
Emotional and Psychological Effects
The emotional and psychological impact of abortion can be significant for some women. Feelings of sadness, guilt, regret, or anxiety are possible after the procedure. The intensity and duration of these feelings vary greatly among individuals.
